ESEI was founded in Brussels, Belgium, in 1997 at a meeting of 17 specialists from the medical and veterinary disciplines, representing 10 different European countries. The main aim of the Society is to facilitate the coordination of studies and research of recently emerged infections affecting both human and animal, and problems of public health related to the food chain.

ESEI held its first 3-days international conference in September 1998 in Budapest, Hungary, which was attended by a mixed medico-veterinary audience, with significant representation from Central and Eastern European countries. Twenty texts of the 35 invited lectures have been published so far in the first two ‘99 issues of IDR. The second congress was also in October 2001 in Budapest.

Other activities of ESEI include invited participations at the following venues:
  • 25 September 1999: “Emerging Rodent-borne Infections”, a main topic of the whole day during the “World Veterinary Congress”, held in Lyon, France, 23 to 26 September 1999.
  • 26 October 1999: Lectures during the special theme day “Emerging and Re-emerging Zoonoses”, organised at “Académie Nationale de Médecine” in Paris, France.
